Authentic lives

Working with the charity Mermaids I met Ally, a mother who has been on an emotional rollercoaster since her teenager Caleb first told her they wanted to transition from female to male, and then identified as non-binary. She shared her story with me which was then published in The Guardian’s Weekend magazine.

Dramatic real life

Marie bravely and openly shared her story about pre and post natal depression with me, which was published in both the Daily Mirror and Take a Break magazine. Her much-wanted twins were donor conceived abroad, but her babies became the source of a great deal of mental anguish as Marie suffered severe depression both during her pregnancy and after their birth.

Campaigns and fundraising

The Sun on Sunday asked me to visit Derian House children’s hospice with Coronation Street actress Tina O’Brien to launch their Christmas campaign. It was a pleasure to meet the families the hospice helps and to work with them on this project.

Emotional interviews

Prima paralympics 1

Working with Prima magazine and the charity Muscular Dystrophy UK I interviewed Helen Hynd, whose sons Sam and Ollie are both Paralympic gold medallists.

Helen was preparing to go to the Paralympics to support Ollie in his bid to win more golds, and told the emotional story of how she discovered both her sons had the muscle wasting condition myopathy, and how they went on to excel at swimming.

I worked with children’s hospice Derian House and Best magazine to tell Anna’s story of how the charity had helped her family after her 13-year-old son Tim died from an aggressive brain tumour while Anna was being treated for breast cancer.

Anna’s courage in sharing her experience helped to make Best readers aware of how important children’s hospices are to families and communities, and allowed her to share Tim’s story with a wider audience.

Case studies of small charities and non-profits

I was commissioned by the Smiley Movement to source 30 stories of UK-based grassroots charities, non-profits and social enterprises as content for their Smiley News platform, which aims to connect their audience with causes where they can donate time or money.  I also worked with Smiley on copywriting briefs for their site.
